Is All Technology In The Vedas?

How Mythology, Politics, And Post-Truth Thinking Distort Science & History

The slogan “All modern technology is already in the Vedas” sounds impressive at first. It gives us a nice feeling that our ancestors were smarter than we are. They knew everything before the west even existed. In contemporary India, claims about ancient scientific achievements have also appeared in political rhetoric and public discourse. They are seen using it to sell national pride wrapped in religious scripture. Similar trend has started to be seen in Nepal as well.

But once you put this claim next to history, archaeology, and basic scientific logic, it collapses. It is not just wrong. It is intellectually dishonest too.

This article explains why the “Vedas have all technology” story is a myth, and why treating religious texts as scientific manuals is a mistake with real consequences.

Stop Stealing Credit from Real Science

Some people who repeat this claim either do not understand science or do not simply care. They ignore a basic distinction. It is useful to distinguish scientific discovery from technological invention. Discovering a natural phenomenon is different from innovating a reproducible technology.

Modern technology is not a gift from the gods. It is the result of long, hard, systematic work. Research, experiments, failures, corrections, peer review are the pillars of it. It takes place in labs, workshops, and universities. Not in hymns and rituals.

Saying “it was already in the Vedas” is a cheap way to steal credit from real scientists and replace methodology with mythology. If you want the credit for science, please show the labs, the data, and concrete results. Not a verse that can be twisted to mean anything after the fact.

The Vedas Are Oral and Ritual Texts, Not Engineering Blueprints

The Vedic collections were transmitted through highly developed oral traditions for centuries. The surviving manuscript record is much later than the period in which the texts were originally composed.

What are the Vedas, fundamentally? The simple answer: hymns to deities, ritual instructions (stotras, mantras), and cosmological as well as philosophical reflections.

Do they contain any among: diagrams (or technical drawings), mathematical formulas for engineering, guided experiments (or error-correction mechanisms), practical procedures for building complex machines?

It is because the Vedas do not function as engineering manuals containing reproducible technical designs for sophisticated machines. They are fundamentally ritual texts.

Archaeological evidence from ancient India (including the Indus Valley) does show Bronze Age technology. For e.g., stone, copper, and bronze tools; advanced urban planning. But this evidence does not demonstrate the advanced machines, electrical systems, or technical blueprints claimed by modern Vedic-technology narratives.

Some even suggest that vitrified (glassy) bricks found at sites like Harappa and Mohenjo-daro were the result of some kind of nuclear explosion. They further add that the nuclear explosion had taken place during the time of The Mahabharata war. They claim the nuclear explosion to be caused by Brahmastra used in the Mahabharata war. Some modern writers interpret the Brahmastra as a weapon capable of causing long-term environmental damage.

However, the nuclear interpretation requires archaeological, geological, and radiometric evidence that has not been demonstrated. Vitrified material alone is not evidence of a nuclear explosion. Therefore, vitrified bricks are not proof of the existence of nuclear technology in ancient Indian subcontinent. Consequently, a destructive supernatural weapon in an epic narrative cannot be the evidence of nuclear technology.

Viman Shastra: A Modern, Debunked Text

The Vaimanika Shastra, (often called the Viman Shastra) is frequently used as “proof” that ancient India had aircraft. But in reality, it is one of the weakest links in this entire narrative.

• The surviving Vaimanika Shastra manuscript is associated with Pandit Subbaraya Shastry and dates to the early twentieth-century manuscript tradition. Its attribution to the ancient sage Bharadvaja is not supported by evidence establishing an ancient date. Even Yuval Noah Harari’s essay – ‘Humility’ is wrong about the author of Vaimanika Shastra where he mentions it to be composed by Sage Bharadwaj.

• In 1974, a team of 5 aeronautical and mechanical engineers from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru including H.S. Mukunda, S.M. Deshpande, H.R. Nagendra, S.P. Govindaraju, and A. Prabhu studied the aircraft described in the text. They concluded that the designs were aeronautically unfeasible and called them “a decided impossibility.”

The geometry of the aircraft describes was found to be completely unsuitable for flight. The propulsion (thrust) ideas would resist flying rather than enable it.

This is not a minor issue. A text does not become scientific just because it uses words like “engine,” “fuel,” or “aircraft.” Technical vocabulary is not technical knowledge. A real technical document must provide designs that obey physical laws and can be built, tested, and reproduced. The Viman Shastra fails that test.

Some people advocate modern spacecraft like SpaceX’s Dragon Capsule, NASA Orion, and the historically renowned Apollo capsules resemble Rukma Viman (an aircraft mentioned in Vimanika Shastra). It turns out that the Rukma Viman was unfeasible for flight. Those modern spacecrafts were designed with a conical base to push intense frictional heat away from the capsule while landing. It also kept the spacecraft balanced as it fell through the atmosphere.

Henceforth, claiming that NASA and SpaceX replicated the designs from Vaimanika Shastra cannot be considered as an act of wisdom or fairness.

A Political Example: Pushpak Viman

This mix-up between myth and technology still shows up in politics. In June 2026, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath spoke about Ayodhya’s new air connectivity and referred to Lord Rama arriving in the mythical Pushpak Viman. He contrasted the ancient account of Pushpak Viman with the long gap before modern air services returned to Ayodhya.

A remark like this can be read as mythology, symbolism, or political theatre. But bring it up as part of the history of aviation, and it becomes misleading. A flying chariot in the Ramayana is not evidence of an engineered aircraft. If it were, we'd need actual blueprints, physical parts left behind by whoever built it, and a real tradition of flight passed down—not just a story from an epic.

A mythological vehicle and an aircraft are not the same thing. One comes from religious imagination and literature. The other needs an engine that produces real thrust, materials that can survive flight stress, and years of testing before anything actually leaves the ground.

Sushruta Samhita: Great Science, but Not “Vedic Science”

The Sushruta Samhita is undoubtedly a genuine historical achievement. It contains detailed discussions of surgery, anatomy, wounds, and the instruments Sushruta's tradition used to treat them. Sushruta deserves recognition for the medical knowledge associated with his tradition.

But this achievement should not be used to prove that his scientific ideas existed in the Vedas. The Sushruta Samhita belongs to the Ayurvedic medical tradition, often described as an Upaveda – a separate body of knowledge. It is not one of the four Vedas or the 18 Puranas. For e.g., there is another Upaveda called Dhanurved (an ancient science of archery and military warfare). Will it be wise to credit the ideas of Dhanurved – a non-religious book to Vedas which are religious texts by category?

That distinction matters because Sushruta was indeed a genius. When an ancient Indian physician made a contribution to surgery, the appropriate response is to study and credit that medical tradition directly. Modern medical-history does recognize the importance of Sushruta Samhita. It is unnecessary to attach the achievement to the Vedas in order to make them appear more prestigious or superior to other religious scriptures.

Calling Sushruta’s work “Vedic science” is therefore a form of retrospective branding. We should call Sushruta what the historical evidence supports. For e.g., a physician, surgeon, and medical writer. Imagine the Italians labeling daVinci’s writings as a part of Roman Catholic legacy. If it sounds unfair, then how can associating Sushruat’s work with the Vedas be fair?

Furthermore, the Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi made a similar kind of claim in 2014 while speaking at the inauguration of a hospital in Mumbai. He suggested that the story of Ganesha’s elephant head indicate the existence of an ancient plastic surgeon in the ancient India. And, he also mentioned that the story of Karna’s birth hinted towards the knowledge of genetic science.

These stories may be used as cultural or theological narratives, but they do not constitute scientific evidence for reconstructive surgery or genetics. A mythological story about an elephant-headed deity is not evidence of reconstructive surgery. Similarly, a miraculous birth story is not evidence of genetics, embryology, or stem-cell technology. Real surgery and real genetics require anatomy, instruments, biological mechanisms, experimental evidence, and reproducible procedures. None of these are described in the Vedas or the Puranas. Plus, it would be unscientific to believe that those could happen with the power of consciousness, manifestation, or any kind of metaphysical devices.

Hence, it will be wise to say that a myth resembles a modern idea instead of saying that an ancient society possessed the relevant science or technology. Similarity of imagery is not proof of historical knowledge.

Retrofitting: Post-Truth Propaganda

A clear pattern emerges whenever these claims are examined.

First, a modern discovery or invention becomes known. Then, someone searches ancient scriptures, epics, or commentaries for words that can be interpreted as referring to it. Once a vague and symbolic resemblance is found, the resemblance is presented as proof that the modern discovery had already been known thousands of years ago.

This is not prediction that the ancient people made. It is retrospective reinterpretation done by the modern society themselves.

A genuine prediction would require a text to provide a clear, specific, understandable, and technically meaningful description before the discovery was made. It should identify the relevant mechanism, make a testable claim, and allow independent readers to understand what is being predicted without the aid of modern afterthought.

A vague reference to a flying vehicle is not a description of an aircraft. A divine weapon is not a nuclear bomb. A miraculous birth is not genetic engineering. A cosmic metaphor is not a theory of relativity.

The standard is often changed after the fact. When a verse happens to resemble a modern concept, it is called scientific foresight. When countless other verses do not match reality, they are ignored. In psychology, this is known as confirmation bias. You accept the apparent matches while silently discarding the mismatches. Some prominent Indian scientists have explicitly rejected this approach.

• Meghnad Saha wrote that after decades of searching the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, and Shastras, he found no root of modern science in them.

• J.V. Narlikar said claims that “all modern discoveries of science are of Vedic origin” do not stand up to scientific inspection. He warned that a “past glory mentality” was dangerous for India’s future because it stifled progress, misunderstood science, and harmed the texts themselves.

This is not ancient wisdom. It is modern insecurity dressed up as tradition. Nations with Hindu-majority populations like India and Nepal should insist on looking forward. They must have a modern scientific temper instead of looking backward for imaginary and so-called ancient technologies.

Zero Archaeological Evidence

If ancient India truly had flying machines, time-travel devices, nuclear weapons or energy plants, and advanced industrial technology, we should have found at least one of the workshops, factories, and production sites.

Where are the tools, engines, and instruments? Where is the consistent iconography of real machines (not the symbolic chariots)? Where are the technical treatises with reproducible instructions?

Mainstream archaeologists and scholars find no credible evidence of technology beyond the Bronze Age tool set in the Indus Valley or later Vedic contexts. No factories. No engines. No instruments. No patents. This means, zero evidence to rely upon.

That is mythology, not engineering, and we must accept this fact with an open mind. We should move forward leaving the past glory mindset aside. Nevertheless, we should keep in mind that some traditions, rituals, festivals and so on are our cultural assets. We must not discard them in the name of scientific progress.

Methodological Gap: No Scientific Method in Scripture

Even a Grade-10 student is aware of the basic outline of scientific inquiry: observation, hypothesis, experiment, replication, peer review, and criticism as well.

Scientific claims always remain open to testing and correction. A theory may be revised or rejected when evidence contradicts it. That capacity for self-correction is one of science’s greatest strengths and beauty.

In contrast, religious scriptures operate through a different kind of authority:

• Revelation or sacred tradition

• Authority of the text

• Commentary and interpretation

• Resistance to falsification

A claim about the physical world that cannot even be principally be tested or shown to be wrong is not functioning as a scientific hypothesis. It is an unfalsifiable claim. A system that can be never proven wrong is not science. It is dogma. Here, every line can be explained as prediction or Vedic foresight through metaphor, symbolism, mistranslation, or hidden meaning. In this way, baseless claims are protected from testing and counterarguments rather than supported by evidence.

Claims that “quantum uncertainty is in Vedanta” or “relativity is in the Bhagavad Gita” do absolute injustice to both science and religious philosophy. They shrink complex scientific theories to symbolic word associations, and turn religious scriptures into containers for whatever modern concept someone wants to find in them.

Why This Myth Is Pushed?

The “all technology is in the Vedas” narrative is not merely an innocent misunderstanding. It serves several political and ideological purposes even if it is unintentional:

I. It can produce nationalist pride, “Our ancestors already knew everything.”

II. It can reinforce religious authority, “The scripture is the ultimate source of knowledge.”

III. It can also support an anti-modern narrative, “Modern science is foreign, while ancient scripture was already superior.”

The problem is not pride in historical achievements. Ancient South Asian scholars made important contributions in literature, philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and so on. However, the problem begins when genuine achievements are exaggerated into preposterous claims and later attributed to texts that do not contain them at the first place.

Some political and religious commentators exploit this confusion because it is emotionally effective. Public figures lacking even basic training in physics, engineering, archaeology, history of science, or textual criticism should especially be evaluated regardless of their beliefs and political status. Some of them speak with great certainty about aircraft, genetics, nuclear weapons, quantum physics, and relativity to provoke the public emotions into their favour.

For example, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi has used the names of prominent scientists to suggest that modern science has deep Vedic origins. He has referred to Julius Robert Oppenheimer and the Bhagavad Gita, Niels Bohr and the Upanishads, and Hermann Oberth and the Vedas.

But these strongly willed associations do not verify what he claims. Oppenheimer’s proximity with the Bhagavad Gita does not mean that the Gita contained knowledge of nuclear physics. A scientist’s interest in a philosophical or religious text does not prove that the text had already predicted his/her scientific finding. Inspiration, personal admiration, or cultural influence is not the same as technical knowledge.

Arguments like “A scientist read (or took inspiration from) a Hindu text. Therefore, the scientific theory or invention is the outcome of the description contained in that text.” are completely irrelevant.

Politicians and influencers may use the prestige of science without accepting the discipline of science. They cite renowned scientists, isolated quotations, and vague similarities, but avoid the things that would actually matter as follows:

• Precise textual evidence

• Reliable dating of the passage

• A clear translation

• A technically accurate description

• Material or archaeological corroboration

• Independent testing and reproducibility

People should therefore be extremely cautious when public figures make such kinds of extraordinary claims about ancient science. The issue is not whether they hold religious beliefs. The issue is whether they are presenting mythology as history and symbolism as engineering.

When politicians use religion to claim scientific superiority, citizens should ask what evidence supports the claim and who benefits from its circulation. Such persuasive devices can generate applause, votes, and online engagement, but it does not produce knowledge nor promote growth.

It also discourages scientific education. If people are told that all knowledge was already present in scripture, they may begin to regard laboratories, universities, experiments, and critical research as unnecessary. That is not civilizational confidence. It is intellectual stagnation disguised as pride.

Misinterpretation of Poetry as Patents

Ancient thinkers had imagination. So do children, science-fiction writers, and novelists. We should regard imagination without evidence as myth-making rather than discovery. Innovation is something else entirely in this scenario.

I acknowledge the fact that imagination, creativity and curiosity are the valuable seeds of all the innovation. The Vedas are full of both real and fake seeds; science is the forest that actually flourished. F or that reason, claiming scientific accomplishments as a hidden achievement of the Vedas merely because a verse can be interpreted to resemble a modern discovery does not honor ancient knowledge; it distorts it.

We must respect the creativity of ancient poets and philosophers. Yet calling their imaginary visions “technology” just because you can stretch a verse to sound like a modern invention and claim scientific credit is not just.

Ancient Indian sub-continental civilization does not need fictional achievements to deserve historical recognition. Indian mathematicians, astronomers, physicians, grammarians, philosophers and engineers made genuine contributions which can be studied through real historical evidence. The achievements of Aryabhata, Brahmagupta, Bhaskara, Panini, Sushruta and others are impressive precisely because they can be investigated as historical intellectual achievements. Turning every mythological image into a modern technological claim does not strengthen this legacy; it obscures it.

Conclusion: Stop Calling Myths “Vedic Glory”

Claiming that “all technology is in the Vedas” is not a demonstration of knowledge; it is an exercise in retrospective hijacking. The Vedas are ancient religious texts concerned with hymns, rituals, deities, cosmology, and sacred tradition. They are not engineering manuals containing the hidden blueprints of modern civilization.

The Vaimanika Shastra, often presented as evidence of ancient aviation, is a modern text whose aircraft designs failed simple scientific examination. The Sushruta Samhita represents a valuable medical tradition. However, it is not a Veda or Purana. Sushruta’s achievements should be studied and credited as medical history rather than being attached to scripture for political or religious prestige.

The same pattern appears when politicians connect Ganesha’s elephant head with plastic surgery, Karna’s birth with genetic science, or Pushpak Viman with aviation. These claims confuse mythological imagery with technical knowledge. They are not supported by the scientific method, textual criticism, or archaeological evidence.

Modern science was not created by stretching ancient verses until they resemble contemporary discoveries. It emerged through observation, experiment, mathematics, engineering, criticism, and repeated testing.

If ancient India actually had airplanes, nuclear technology, advanced genetics, or industrial machinery, then the evidence should be available like: factories, tools, engines, materials, technical drawings, manufacturing systems, and reproducible designs. Until such evidence is discovered, these claims merely remain mythology falsely presented as history.

The problem isn't believing that ancient Indians were intelligent. The problem is claiming ancient technological knowledge without evidence.

People should be skeptical especially when politicians and influencers make these claims without any expertise in the relevant fields. Religion can be used to create emotional loyalty, national pride, and political obedience. But again, none of those things can substitute for evidence.

Respecting the past does not mean inventing (or remoulding) a past. Genuine patriotism does not require falsehood. And genuine respect for ancient thinkers means allowing their ideas to be studied honestly. Turning every myth, metaphor, and miracle into a claim about modern technology is not how we should study the past.
